TuxGuitar is a great music writing and learning tool with no pretensions to being a real DAW, although it does contain some DAW type features. It is a multitrack guitar tablature and standard notation editor and play that can open Guitar Pro, PowerTab and TablEdit files. It can export to standard file formats like MIDI, Music XML and Lilyond, making it very versatile as a sort of musical notebook for your creativity.
TuxGuitar allows you to compose music with the tab editor or you can write in standard notation. It has a score viewer, a multitrack display, supports triplets and has time signature management and one button tempo management. You can add effects like bends, slides, hammer-ons and pull-offs and vibrato.
When composing you can add a fretboard image, pick the notes and TuxGuitar will notate it in the form you choose. You can also add chords and it will include its image above the transcription. Your composition can also have bass, keyboards and drums.
Creating multitracks with TuxGuitar takes just one click. Your playback dialog will run with the editing window if you want it to. This is a very user friendly program for both Windows and Mac, easy to learn and manipulate and the toolbars are easy to understand.
It's also easy to use TuxGuitar to learn new songs. Although some users say the sounds of the instruments aren't totally convincing it's one of the easiest ways to learn a song. It will play the song as you read it and has an option to start with a slow tempo and gradually speed it up.
