Super Mario Bros, a platform video game, hit the market in 1985 as a game for Nintendo. It was the best selling game on the market until the introduction of Wii Sports in 2009 and catapulted Nintendo to global success. The catchy theme music and likable Mario character spawned sequels that gamers of all ages enjoy.
In this game, Mario is on a quest to rescue Princess Toadstool from the despicable monster, Bowser. In the two-player mode he is accompanied by his younger brother Luigi. As they race through the Mushroom Kingdom they encounter hazards and enemies such as Koopas and Goombas. Jumping on a Koopa will cause it to retreat into its shell, which Mario can then use to kick at nearby enemies. Along the way he can take advantage of the power-ups hiding in bricks that he hits with his head by jumping. Sometimes Mario is rewarded with coins when he breaks open a brick and other times he receives a flower that allows him to throw fireballs, an extra life or a magic mushroom that allows him to grow to twice his size. Less often he will find the elusive Starman, which makes him invulnerable to everything save a fatal plunge into lava or off a cliff.
There are eight different worlds in the Mushroom Kingdom with four sub-levels apiece. Mario travels to those sub-levels through warp pipes, which often lead to areas that offer coins. Sometimes the pipes will advance Mario, allowing him to skip levels.
The game ends when Mario defeats Bowser. Mario's job is to weaken the bully by chipping away at his defenses. Once Bowser is defeated Mario receives the effusive thanks of Princess Toadstool. Even gamers who like the more sophisticated sequels to Super Mario Bros enjoy playing the original.
