StarDict is international dictionary software with more than 1000 dictionaries available. It features Glob-style pattern matching, scan selection word, fuzzy query and more to aid you in looking up definitions.
Once you download one of the dictionaries of your choice, just restart and it will be there. The software allows you to group dictionaries as you wish, perhaps by the frequency you use them or by language. Don't worry if you accidentally hit the "delete" button; the dictionary you delete will not be erased from the database but only from the group you put it in.
You can also access dictionaries online by selecting the "enable net dictionaries" in the preference button. By doing this you can look up words without downloading an entire dictionary.
Features include a "text translate" icon as well as spelling suggestions. StarDict also has an option for a TTS (text-to-speak) program. This is useful when looking up different languages that you may not know how to pronounce.
Results are simple to read, displayed in a GUI that uses a cursor, called "tooltip". This makes it easier to look up and retrieve definitions, translations and pronunciations.
Among the dictionaries available are Webster's, Oxford, V.E.R.A. (an acronym dictionary), Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary, Jargon File, CIA World Factbook, Moby Thesaurus, a large selection of bilingual dictionaries and more.
StarDict is also available for iPhone and iPod Touch.
