Microsoft Office Sharepoint server (MOSS) runs on top of Windows Sharepoint Services (WSS), adding core features and and user web parts. Essentially, it's a workflow engine and business intelligence tool and a very good one at that.
MOSS' main advantage and strength is in organizing users' information in a central web-based application and classifying data. In the past, users have had difficulty with the sheer volume of unstructured documents, email, messages and more that are generated by their organizations. MOSS takes the chaos and changes it to well-organized, accessible content through SharePoint.
One of the most important and convenient features of Office Sharepoint Server is MySite. MySite lets a user access to a personalized view of information that is important to them in a public view or private view. The user can select who has permission to view their MySite information. This feature saves a lot of wasted navigation time; users can access and see the workspaces for which they have permission. MySite also has a colleague tracker, Outlook email and calendars and allows the user to keep track of
personal links that are relevant to their jobs. Being able to track their own work and information makes MySite a powerful tool for organization and clarity.
Little wonder that the easily installed Office Sharepoint Server has been referred to in user reviews as a great office smorgasbord. |
